My Style & What's Yours?

It wasn't until sophomore year of high school that I really began to develop a love for fashion.  I spent a lot of time trying to define my style, and bounced from look to look.  Up until then, I remember swapping three different shirts with my best friend that we thought were "cool," and we alternated days wearing them.  Looking back now, I laugh.  I thought I knew and understood fashion, but it wasn't until much later that I really defined my style.  From amazing thrift store finds to high end designer items - my style has dramatically evolved and changed into what it is today.

I would define my style now as classic staples with trendy accents.  Simple lines that flatter the figure but also adding a bit of edge with "it" items of the season.  Figuring out your personal style doesn't happen over night.  It takes time, and the ability to feel confident in yourself to pull off whatever it is you want to wear.

Here are a few looks that I love.  Pieces of each look embody the style that I find to be most like my own.  I used the collection index on the Vogue website to find these looks.

Marc Jacobs - Spring 2001 Ready-to-Wear

Tory Burch - 2012 Resort

Carolina Herrera - 2012 Resort

Each look above makes me smile when I look at them.  I can see myself wearing these looks (even though I could never afford them!), and feeling good about myself while doing so.  Have you ever sat and thought about your personal style?  Are you the type of shopper that buys something simply because it is on sale, and not because it makes you feel confident in yourself?  Can you handle the judgment of others to follow your own fashion sense?  These are all questions that I have answered personally over the years, and I ask you do the same, if you haven't before.  Embracing what makes you happy, is the best thing you can do for yourself.

  1. I'm such a late bloomer in life, and that includes in my fashion sense and personal style as well. I used to always try to copy the looks of others, but was never able to quite pull it off in the same way. I feel I came into my own a few years ago and am now all about investing in classic, key, timeless pieces, then accessorizing with what's in now. I know I rarely show off my fashion sense in class, but I do love to put a look together and rock it with confidence when I'm out and about town! Great advice, as always!

  2. I think that you curate personal style in exactly the same way that you build an art collection: you start with stuff you like and figure out how it all goes together once you see it in the same place at the same time.

Building one's own style is an incredibly creative process and it requires an on-the-spot skill to pull it off.

Here's to staples. If I buy one more black shirt...

  3. Love your blog and love this post! It's interesting - I wouldn't feel comfortable in the outfits you pictured, but I think they're very cute. I spent a lot of time wearing what was 'appropriate', but it's taken until my 30s to figure out what works for me. My husband teases me that I dress more like a hipster teenager now!

  4. I think my personal style is comfortable and hopefully cute. I try to find clothes that make me happy and that I feel good in. I just wish I had more money to spend on clothes. I wouldn't say I am the trendsetter by any means, but I do like to stay at least "fresh" and up-to-date with the styles.

  5. Oh how I remember those shirts. One was bright red, one may have bee blue and from The Limited, and one was the black scoop neck Guess shirt. I think we also posed in them as models with our fake oakleys. those were the days.

  6. I think it's SO important to dress in line with your own personal style. If you feel good in what you're wearing, you can totally exude confidence. And it's been interesting to me to watch my own personal style change as I've grown older and more comfortable in my own skin. It's important to change and grow... fashion style and all sort of other ways!

  7. I used to have style back in my skinny days. Now I shop and look for clothes that won't make me look like a giant blueberry, olive, pear...you name the fruit. I am so ready to lose weight so I can actually wear clothes that aren't just off the rack from Kohls. Someday. Great post, great blog....please keep it up after the class so when I do become skinny, I won't go out and buy 80's parachute pants and neon headbands. :)
